The
Galaxy-2 features dual, symmetrical rubber edged,
high-power
low frequency bass drivers having a woven carbon-fibre cone and a vented magnet. The computer correlated low-frequency alignment has enabled us to achieve an extended bass response which has a -3dB. point, around 40Hz. This is as improvement on deep bass performance of many separate sub-woofer systems without the greatly added cost and complexity, as well as providing much greater sound transparency. Further, they present an easy load on the amplifier as they are a nominal 8 Ohms impedance, the minimum being 6 Ohms. The Audiosound Laboratories Galaxy 2 system offers depth, clarity and overall realism usually associated with much higher priced speakers. Its efficiency means that even good quality low-powered amplifiers are capable of producing very satisfying sound when driving these speakers. Apart from the choice of drivers, this high level of performance from such modestly priced speakers is due to the elegant, equalised cross-over/filter system which divides the level and frequency of the sound between the various speaker units. Although this system is a floor-standing tower design, it has similar tonal balance to other smaller loudspeakers in our range. This is very important for professional users where both large and small speakers are used for monitoring purposes. Dual Bass Drivers - We are not into gimmicks. Most multiple speaker systems create more problems than they solve when it comes to sheer clarity and naturalness, but they do have tremendous sales advantages! The purpose of the dual bass arrangement in the Galaxy - 2 is to increase power handling and efficiency. Extra speakers in a box will not give extended bass, but less! This is because if you add an extra bass driver you then only have half the available enclosure volume for each speaker. So to get back to the same bass response you would need an enclosure twice as big. However, by using a very elegant floor standing column design of relatively modest dimensions, this extended bass comes from using a vented alignment and a much larger box than would normally be used for speakers of this size. A further advantage of vented alignment is that the cone movement of the bass drivers for a given power level is considerably lower which not only improves power handling but improves distortion as well. The over-all bass response is even lower than some higher priced "popular" systems employing a sub-woofer (a separate larger box to handle the bass sound only). With the Galaxy – 2 there is no fussing with such complications; just feed each speaker in the normal way for stunning sound on all kinds of music from pulsating rock, a massive Mahler symphony, or the detail of a string quartet. The Treble Unit - The high frequencies are handled by a 25mm low-distortion soft-dome unit having wide-dispersion high-efficiency which enables us to reduce the power into it to match the bass-units which improve power handling and distortion even further. Also, the 18dB/octave 3rd order filter also gives better protection to the tweeter from damaging lower frequency components in music signals. Three Position Level Control for Subtle Balancing - For different rooms where acoustics vary, there are three positions for adjusting the high – frequency balance: 1) Flat - for most applications or as a starting point, 2) Presence lift and 3) Contour, which may be useful when listening at lower sound levels. Good Efficiency - A 20 watt RMS. per channel amplifier under most domestic situations will drive the Galaxy – 2 very cleanly to quite high sound levels. No need to worry about having a low powered amplifier. Just connect them to your present amplifier for stunning sound. However, we still recommend that any amplifier used with these speakers should exhibit very low distortion for best results, and naturally we would suggest our own mos-fet power amplifiers as an ultimate choice. The Cross-Over/Filter - As in all our speakers, the Galaxy 2 is no slouch in this department either. Distortion and power handling are a function of cone motion and this is very important with lightweight treble cones. In order to reduce this cone motion under dynamic music signals we use a 3rd order 18dB./Octave filter which greatly reduces the unwanted lower frequencies from interfering with the treble-unit. Hence, for a given power level there is much lower distortion, or, putting it another way, for a given amount of distortion, a much higher sound level is obtained. All the coils in this highly refined cross-over are the more expensive air-cored types, (for zero distortion increase with power). The Cabinet - A cabinet needs to be more than just good-looking. Good bass needs a solid cabinet. The cabinet is made from dense MDF material, which is an inert, rigid wood product which has minimal box resonance colouration. In addition, it has front to back and side to side crossbracing, with an extra thick 25mm. front baffle. The only parts allowed to vibrate are the speaker diaphragms. Also, the front grille is easily removed for future repairs if they get damaged in later years. Time has proven that the majority of Audiosound Laboratories speakers enjoy a very long service life. There are still many of our first-run speakers being enjoyed today. A Bonus - No Extra Stands Required - The Galaxy 2 is designed as a floor standing unit and come complete with a plinth. There are no extra costs involved for stands etc. Yet, the footprint of these efficient, full powered, floor-standing speakers is only slightly larger than expensive mini-systems offering only modest overall performance by comparison. Five Year Warranty - To back our claims for our speakers we give you something that you will probably never need except the confidence in our name: a five year transferable warranty for domestic users from a firm that has been manufacturing here in Australia for over 30 years.
